Foxtel installers are threatening to take industrial action, saying they’re under increasing pressure to cut corners when installing the pay TV service.
The Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) on Thursday launched a campaign for better working conditions, after new contracts were introduced earlier this month that cut pay rates and imposed fines for taking sick days.
The union says 94 per cent of the installers, who are under the management of telecommunications contractors BSA and Downer, are being pressured to cut corners because of restrictions on pay rates and time allowances.
97 per cent said they expected to earn less this year than they did last year.
91 per cent said they were already struggling to pay their bills at times.

Once upon a time the media looked like the distant, exclusive realm of celebrities, politicians and VIPs. Jane and John Does viewed the media as so cut off from their daily lives that in most cases a course in media-handling sounded as far-fetched as one in rocket science (though perhaps altogether less enticing). Conversely, those intent on being featured in what we dub as traditional media today often had to go to great lengths and great expense (contracting the services of PR agencies and the like) to enjoy their minute in the limelight.
Those days are gone, and I dare to say never to be back.

The parent of Apple supplier Foxconn has broken ground on a new R&D (research and development) facility in Taiwan to produce what could be robots that will be used in the company’s manufacturing facilities.
Hon Hai Precision Industry Company held a groundbreaking ceremony this past weekend for its “Intelligent Automation R&D Facility”, which will be built in the Taichung Science Park in Taiwan.
In July, Hon Hai’s chairman Terry Gou said the company plans to deploy 1 million robots over the next three years at the company’s Foxconn factories.
