ODesk, an online employment platform, conducted a survey which found businesses are growing through the use of remote contractors, and these contractors are earning more or starting their own business.
The survey found a distributed workforce is a key element to the success of businesses and workers. In the last year, a reported one-half of employers said they were able to grow in terms of revenue, size or scope of service, and two-thirds of contractors said they will make more money in 2011 than in 2010. Because modern technology allows remote communications between employer and employee, 54 percent of employers do not have a preference of where their workers are based, and 71 percent of workers do not have a preference as to where their employer is located.
According to a Man Power Group survey, 52 percent of companies in the U.S. report having trouble finding talent to fill positions. The survey found 16 percent of companies planned to search outside their local region in order to find the right candidates.
ODesk also reported 28 percent of employers built a distributed team in an effort to access talent outside of the local area, and 21 percent of employers said an online workforce enabled them to respond to the needs of their businesses through quick scaling up or down of employees. And colleagues stay connected with 58 percent of communication between contractors and employers happening via email, and 32 percent via Skype or instant message.
