Repent, oh ye sinners, the economy is in purgatory — corporate layoffs are rising faster than they have in a year. Reports the WSJ:

The increase in layoffs is a key reason why the U.S. recorded an average of only 21,500 new jobs over the past two months, far below the level needed to bring down unemployment, which now stands at 9.2 percent.

The cuts also reflect the shifting outlook of employers, many of whom had expected the economy to gain speed as the year progressed. Instead, growth has faltered. I

Just as the Obama administration seeks to protect consumers from breaches of personal privacy, the IRS is being told that it’s too slow to tell taxpayers when their personal information wasn’t kept private.

In a report released July 14, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) chastised the IRS for taking too long to inform taxpayers, or not telling them at all.   Auditors reviewed 98 cases involving inadvertent disclosures of personal information from fiscal years 2009 and 2010 and found that 35 cases involved failing to notify the taxpayer or failing to do so within 45 days of the exposure. Growth in internet advertisements for skilled workers was flat in June from a month earlier, national data shows.

The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations’ internet vacancy index in June was unchanged at 92.7 points, 10.6 per cent higher than in June 2010.

Its more up-to-date, but less reliable, newspaper-based skilled vacancies index (SVI) fell by 1.5 per cent in July to 38.4 points, to be 16.8 per cent lower than in July 2010.

The department said in April that it was considering dropping the SVI because the trend among businesses was towards internet advertising.

The latest report is based on 236,700 internet job ads compared with just 1600 newspaper job ads.

Internet-based skilled vacancies increased for four of the eight occupational groups monitored by the department in June.

The largest increase was recorded for labourers, which rose 1.4 per cent, followed by community and personal service workers that rose 1.3 per cent.

Demand for clerical and administrative workers fell by 1.1 per cent.

During the month, the Northern Territory posted the largest increase, rising by 2.0 per cent, followed by Western Australia, up 0.9 per cent.

The biggest drop was recorded in the ACT, down 4.4 per cent.

Queensland showed the biggest increase in ads over the year, rising by 22.7 per cent.

Tasmania recorded a 21.8 per cent drop in ads over the past year, the only jurisdiction to decline.

You may dream of one day having that posh job with a fancy desk and your own company business cards to hand out to othersbut the fact of the matter is that business cards shouldnt be something in your future. You should have them right now. When used correctly, a business card can actually help you get a job.

Business cards allow you to follow up with a personal connection to network and find that job you really want. For example, lets say that youre attending a career fair. Along with many of the other attendees, youll likely take with you a stack of resumes, shake a lot of hands, and wait patiently (or not so patiently) by the phone afterward, hoping to get a phone call from one of the people youve met.

Most people will never get that call.

There is a difference between sound branding and brand association using music. When you use a popular song to help promote your company or product you’re using those songs to brand you. While this is an effective, and popular model, you need to incorporate that music and make it a piece of your sound brand. A good anecdote I have is when one of my teachers at Berklee College of Music told us he was cooking during a football game when he heard a catchy song on TV. He never bothered to look the song up because he was busy cooking obviously, and the commercial ended. T
